There are two histograms on this page representing the same dataset in two different ways. At the top, the height of each bar represents the number of data points in that bin.

In the second diagram, the height is chosen so that the area of the bar represents the fraction of data in that bin. For instance, if 10% of the data is contained in one bin, then the area of the bar above that bin will be 0.10.
